dark arts productions PARTNERS WITH BREAST CANCER CHARITY PINK FUND

Greetings and a warm welcome!

I’m Adrian Dane, founder of Dark Arts Productions—the team that brings you Sword and Veil. In the wake of the pandemic, it was my dream to craft a monthly immersive fantasy event blending the mystique of masquerades with the magickal elements that make Portland so unique—a gathering to bring us back out of the shadows and nurture a sense of community.

Fortune smiled on us with not just a phenomenal team to bring that dream to life, but an incredible community of fantasy and costume enthusiasts who turned Sword and Veil into a visual feast every month.

But as the poets have warned us since time immemorial, fortune is fickle. One day you’re busy booking acts, and the next a routine mammogram comes back with a cancer diagnosis.

Initially I was naively optimistic about my capabilities, but I quickly learned otherwise. Chemo knocked me out for months. Most days I was too exhausted to get out of bed, and I had the infamous chemo “brain fog” that made it hard to make decisions. As frustrating as it was, I had no choice but to downsize. That meant temporarily putting Sword and Veil on hold and cutting back from monthly to quarterly.

A PHOENIX FROM THE ASHES

That’s why I’m so excited to announce that chemo treatment is finished, and Sword and Veil is back!

Our team is busy getting everything ready for our return on June 13 for Myths and Legends. The theme is inspired by the legend of the phoenix, the mythical bird reborn from the ashes of its old self. It’s an enduring myth because it’s so often necessary to believe in—none of us is immune to life pulling the rug out from under us, but when it does, the phoenix gives us hope: a fire that consumes you doesn’t have to destroy you—it can transform you.

One of the most difficult aspects of cancer recovery is the financial cost. In the United States, 66.5 percent of all personal bankruptcies are tied to medical bills. In addition to treatment costs, there’s often lost income from not being able to work during recovery. Dark Arts Productions was interested in partnering with a cancer charity and while funding research is vitally important, Pink Fund’s focus on financial assistance for people struggling with lost income really resonated. Donations to Pink Fund finance a 90-day grant program that helps meet patients’ critical expenses for housing, transportation, utilities, and insurance.

No one undergoing breast cancer treatment should ever have to choose between getting medical care or paying their household bills. The financial side can be just as devastating as the medical side. That's why Pink Fund’s motto is “Real Help for the Other Part of the Fight.”
